Poem 8

The Ugly Duckling
Sonnet based on the original fairy tale of “The ugly duckling”

Once upon a time on a large farm yard
Lives Mother Duck who lays eggs in a den
Sun shines on the eggs that are strong and hard
Then they start to hatch, a total of ten

The baby ducks are all pretty but one
Big, ugly duckling with gray feather
All the others make fun of the ugly one
Making him sad, gloomy in a blunder

Despite the constant teasing and mocking
The ugly duckling grows and grows by time
Until he grows into something shocking
Into an alluring swam in his prime

No one dares to scorn him ever again
He lives with pride and esteem in his fen.
